The information provided within this page will help you plan your fishing trip to the cold waters within our Northwestern mountains.

The cold, clear water dotting our landscape holds some of the largest native brook trout in the state of Maine. Brook trout in the four pound range are common!
Some of our glacial lakes offer some fast salmon and lake trout fishing.

Arnold Pond

Arnold Pond Maximum Depth-62 feet
Area-149 Acres
Gamefish-LL Salmon and Brook Trout
Feed-Smelt, Shiners, Chubs and Insects

         Arnold Pond is a relatively small pond with a healthy population of native brook trout.

          Salmon can be caught when the water temperature remains cool although during the summer months they move into deeper water and away from the reach of fly casters. Watch for them early in the morning during warmer months.

          Access is via Rt. 27. There is a spot to launch a canoe or small boat at a launch on the Northern end of the pond. Back to the Ponds


Barnard Pond

Barnard Pond Maximum Depth-27 feet
Area-17 Acres
Gamefish-Brook Trout
Feed-Shiners, Minnows and Insects

          This pond is relatively deep for its size. It is primarily spring fed so the fish remain active during warmer months.

          Brook trout have been stocked in this pond although a healthy population of native fish survive.

          Access is off of the Tim Pond road. A short hike or 4 wheeler ride will bring you to the pond. Back to the Ponds


North Branch of The Dead River

Maximum Depth-16 feet
Area-13 miles
Gamefish-Brook Trout and Salmon
Feed-Minnows, Dace, and Insects

          The North Branch of the Dead begins at the Chain of ponds above Eustis. This stretch of water offers both fast and slow water conditions for fly fisherman. Brook trout are found throughout the river and LL Salmon can be had in the Spring and Fall with the higher, cooler water.

          Access is along Route 27, Pumpkin pond or from the dam in Eustis village.

Blanchard Pond

Blanchard Pond Maximum Depth-27 feet
Area-9 Acres
Gamefish-Brook Trout
Feed-Minnows and Insects

          This pond is within Alder Stream township, part of the Penobscot Nation land. Not known for large brook trout it makes up in quantity. A great spot to learn to fly cast. With a good hatch in the evening, this pond is hard to beat.

        Access is though the Snow Mountain Pond road. Watch for the turnout on the left.

Bugeye Pond

Bugeye Pond Maximum Depth-11 feet
Area-6 Acres
Gamefish-Brook Trout
Feed-Minnows and Insects

          Bugeye pond surprises a lot of fisherman. A small spring fed pond that has known to produce 3lb trout. It has been stocked although holds plenty of natives as well.

          Access is via Rt. 27. Look for the turnout after crossing the North Branch. Back to the Ponds



 



Caribou Bog

Caribou Bog Maximum Depth-6 feet
Area-5 Acres
Gamefish-Brook Trout
Feed-Minnows and Insects

          This pond is the first pond to clear of ice in the spring. Fishing can be fast and furious early although as the mercury rises weeds and warm water become the enemy. A great caddis hatch can make your night on this pond.

          Access is via Rt. 27. North of the Chain of Ponds you will find a small road with a wooden gate. Park to the side and a short walk will bring you to the pond. Back to the Ponds


Chain of Ponds

Chain of PondsMaximum Depth-106 feet
Area-700 Acres
Gamefish-LL Salmon, Brook Trout and Lake Trout
Feed-Smelt, Shiners, Dace, Sculpin and Insects

          The Chain of Ponds consists of five interconnected basins of water. All five of these basins sustain healthy cold water species.

        Ice-Out is usually by the first of May and can be an exciting time of year. The size of the Salmon has been improving over the years due to the slot limit on Togue. Big Brook trout can be caught while trolling a fly or casting in the evening. Bounce those blades later in the season for Togue and Salmon. Keep an eye peeled for fast forming storms over Bag mountain.

          Access is via Rt. 27. There are boat launches along the pond and campsites up and down the shore. Natanis Point campground offers great sites with an unforgettable view of the lake and mountains.

Flagstaff Lake

Arnold PondMaximum Depth-48 feet
Area-20,300 Acres

Flagstaff Lake is the largest man made lake in the Northeast. Formed by damming the outlet back in the 1950's. The lake is relatively shallow although holds an impressive population of Brook Trout. The lower part of the lake, towards Long Falls Dam, is popular for trolling in the spring and the channel throughout the lake will always produce fish. Pickerel and Perch offer exciting action on a fly rod or light spinning rod. Ice fishing is also popular.

          The lake is popular for remote camping. Its many islands and secluded coves make for one of a kind campsites. Artifacts can be found around many of the inlets and beaches.
         
Access is available around the entire lake. Major launches are found in Stratton, Cathedral Pines in Eustis and Long Falls Dam. Back to the Ponds



Greely Pond

Greely Maximum Depth-3 feet
Area-42 Acres
Gamefish-Brook Trout
Feed-Minnows and Insects

Greely is a shallow spring fed pond that produces big Brook Trout. Fishing is limited to early and late in the season as weeds and warm water overtake the pond in the summer months. Find a spring hole in July though and you will become a believer.

Access is via Rt. 16 and4 wheeler. Back to the Ponds


Greenbush Pond

Greenbush Pond Maximum Depth-22 feet
Area-21 Acres
Gamefish-Brook Trout
Feed-Shiners, Dace and Insects

          Greenbush is a spring fed pond that offers early fishing for brook trout. It is popular with ice fisherman. A general law pond, it is a great spot to start a young fisherman. Perch can be found in the warmer months.
         
Access is via Rt. 27. Back to the Ponds


Horseshoe Pond

Horseshoe Pond Maximum Depth-13 feet
Area-37 Acres
Gamefish-LL Salmon and Brook Trout
Feed-Shiners, Dace, and Insects

          This spring fed pond holds a healthy population of native Brook Trout and a few LL Salmon. Lack of cold water in the summer and spawning have kept the Salmon population down. Hatches are exciting on this water with the Green Drake hatch virtually unforgettable.

Access is via Rt. 27, North of the Chain of Ponds. Back to the Ponds


Jim Pond

Jim Pond Maximum Depth-125 feet
Area-320 Acres
Gamefish-LL Salmon, Brook Trout, Lake Trout, Cusk and Whiteish
Feed-Smelt, Shiners, Dace and Insects

Jim Pond offers ideal cold water fishing for LL Salmon, Brook Trout and Togue. It is a deep glacial lake with plenty of shoals for spawning. Brook Trout are native and large. Salmon are healthy and the Togue are plentiful.
          Access is via gravel road off of the King and Bartlett road. There is a maintained launch at the Northern end of the lake. Back to the Ponds


Little Jim Pond

Little Jim Pond Maximum Depth-37 feet
Area-64 Acres
Gamefish-Brook Trout
Feed-Shiners, Dace and Insects

          Little Jim is a deep spring fed pond that holds large Brook Trout. The pond is stocked due to the lack of spawning area. Native Brook trout have been caught in the 5lb range. The pond is full of baitfish and the Trout are strong and healthy. A 12 inch Brookie weighs close to a pound and they are full of life. The Green Drake hatch is spectacular here.
          Access is via the King and Bartlett road. Take a right at the gatehouse to the launch. Back to the Ponds


Massachusetts Bog

Mass. Bog Maximum Depth-12 feet
Area-55 Acres
Gamefish-Brook Trout
Feed-Minnows, Shiners, Chubs and Insects

        Mass. Bog is a shallow bog that is full of spring holes. Large native brook trout lurk behind the stumps of this dam controlled water. Fish can be caught throughout the season although can be tricky to find during the warmer months.
        Access is through the Big Island gate off Rt. 27 in Coburn Gore. Mountain bikes or hiking will take you to the bog.

Otter Pond

Otter Pond Maximum Depth-8 feet
Area-30 Acres
Gamefish-Brook Trout
Feed-Minnows and Insects

          Otter is another shallow spring fed pond that holds native Brook trout. Insect hatches provide for exciting fishing.
          Access is via Rt. 27 North of the Chain of Ponds. Back to the Ponds


Spring Lake

Spring Lake Maximum Depth-78 feet
Area-762 Acres
Gamefish-Brook Trout, LL Salmon, Lake Trout
Feed-Smelt, Dace, Minnows and Insects

          Spring lake provides a large volume of oxygenated water suitable for large lake trout and salmon. Trolling is popular in the spring and ice fishing is available in the winter.
          Access is via gravel road towards Long Falls. Take the right towards Jim Eaton Hill. There is a nice boat launch on the South end of the lakes.
